Maxthon名氣小，卻吸引了中國成千上萬希望避開政府搜尋管制的用戶。

Maxthon是由北京一家同名公司推出，由於具有藉由Web proxy避開政府控管網路搜尋資訊(如Google、Yahoo、MSN等)的機制，深受中國網友歡迎。

這種瀏覽器在歐洲、美國等地也有逐步打開名聲的跡象，從2003年首次發布到目前為止，大約已有6000萬人下載了Maxthon 瀏覽器，Maxthon 表示，中國14% 的網友已經使用過他們的瀏覽器，17% 的中國網友用它來進行網路搜尋。

Maxthon 資深 副總裁Netanel Jacobsson表示：「Maxthon 在中國正在呈現爆炸性的成長。」

Maxthon當然不敢公然提倡這個proxy功能，中國網友是透過私下傳播的方式得知這個管道。使用該瀏覽器的用戶也必須具備相當的技術知識才有辦法啟用，不過Jacobsson表示許多大陸BBS都有教大家怎麼用。

「這個功能是給知道的人使用的。」Jacobsson受訪時表示。

Maxthon 的流行顯示，盡管瀏覽器的戰爭表面上很早之前就已經結束，但網頁瀏覽器市場的創新並沒有死亡，也沒有被市場忽略。

Forrester 研究公司的數據顯示，在美國的瀏覽器市場，微軟的IE 6瀏覽器佔領了60% ，在全球，IE瀏覽器佔有率為85%。雖然如此，瀏覽器市場的競爭空間仍相當的大。

Jupiter 分析師Michael Gartenberg表示：「瀏覽器是最重要的領域，但大家似乎不怎麼重視。」

去年，Firefox 開始搶佔IE瀏覽器的地盤，在不到兩年的時間內，Firefox 的下載量超過了1.3 億。另外，Opera、Netscape、Flock 以及蘋果的Safari都有自己的用戶群，但它們都不足以撼動IE。Firefox的威脅和流行引起了微軟的警覺，IE 7即將登場。

Gartenberg表示：「瀏覽器的戰爭還在繼續，只不過現在是局部的小競爭，而不是全球性的衝突，因為瀏覽器無法賣錢。」

一些技術投資者們表示，大家不應該忘記，瀏覽器是未來網際網路的基礎，如果瀏覽器很好的話，用戶可以更好的存取網路及電腦資訊。

Maxthon 瀏覽器的創投商William Tai 表示：「寬頻時代的到來，AJAX和RSS 等技術的出現正在重新定義瀏覽器的角色，它將從一種單純的閱讀器變成用戶的一種客製化起始點。用戶要上網的話，首先點擊的就是瀏覽器。」

目前，網路瀏覽器的大部分收入來自搜尋廣告。以Firefox 為例，它的收入就來自Google的搜尋廣告，Firefox 的預設搜尋引擎就是Google.

在中國，Maxthon 的預設搜尋引擎是百度。在國外，Maxthon 的預設搜尋引擎為雅虎以及Ask.com。

從2004年開始，Maxthon 開始獲利。80% 的收入來自和搜尋相關的廣告。

Maxthon 公司在北京有15名開發人員。由於Maxthon 實際上使用了微軟的IE核心，因此可避免和軟體巨人形成直接的競爭關係。

Maxthon 主管表示，他們主要透過分頁及平行瀏覽這樣的特色吸引用戶。但是，這是一把雙刃劍，不喜歡微軟的人很可能就會放棄使用Maxthon 瀏覽器。

Jacobsson 表示：「我們讓瀏覽器看起來很漂亮。」另外，Maxthon 也調整IE核心，因此瀏覽速度更快，用戶還能夠選擇使用Mozilla 的Gecko 核心引擎。

Jacobsson 表示：「瀏覽器很像一輛汽車。大部分的人不會去關心它的內部引擎，他們選擇汽車的款式，比如外觀和顏色。」
